Episode 18 Under Control

Season 1,Episode 18, Under Control, Aired 15/04/2010

Under Control Vampire Diaires
“Under Control” begins with a shirtless Stefan working out to loud music which annoys Damon and you can immediately tell that something’s not quite right. Thanks to his insatiable thirst for human blood, we see a different side of Stefan and it almost feels like an alternate universe. He’s fun, he’s outgoing and most of all he’s drunk. Though Stefan tells Elena that he’s fine, we all know he’s not because he keeps on going into vamp mode whenever he makes out with Elena and even goes on a drinking spree at the Founder’s Day party where he almost sucked Kelly’s bloody forehead and nearly fed on a stranger. While Stefan’s addiction clearly serves a roadblock in his relationship with Elena, there’s an upside to all this. First of all, drunk Stefan is always more interesting to watch than sober Stefan. Second, it’s nice to see Damon showing concern for his brother. And last but not the least, this brings Elena a lot closer to Damon.

Jeremy’s Discovery

After finding out the truth about vampires and the fact that his ex-girlfriend Vicki wasn’t one and was in fact dead, Jeremy suspects that someone murdered Vicki and refuses to believe that she overdosed with drugs. He confronts Elena and Sheriff Forbes about the circumstances surrounding Vicki’s death but doesn’t find the answers he’s looking for. Thanks to Elena’s diary, he eventually finds out the truth, which makes me wonder what he’s next move is going to be considering he now knows that Elena is involved with Vicki’s death and that she’s not related to him by blood.

We don’t get a lot of Tyler scenes of The Vampire Diaries but when we do, it gradually hints that there’s more to Tyler than meets the eye. I don’t want to dole out any spoilers here but it’s pretty clear that he has this uncontrollable rage which surfaced as Matt punched him for making out with his mother Kelly. And it also feels like his dad, Mayor Lockwood, is aware of his periodic outbursts.

Uncle John

Right from the start, it’s obvious that Uncle John Gilbert is deemed more as a rival than a friend because as soon as he arrives in Mystic Falls, he pretty much gets on everyone’s nerves, including Aunt Jenna, who slept with him in the past, and Sheriff Forbes, who thinks he’s a jackass. For viewers, though, John’s arrival is like opening a can of worms. Because aside from alerting the Founder’s Council about the neighboring town’s missing campers and blood bank break-ins (which can only imply that vampires are causing trouble once again), he also manages to tell Damon that he knows what he is and is aware that he’s responsible for opening the tomb. But that’s not the most shocking twist of all. It turns out he knows Katherine and Isobel and has the same ring as Alaric–which explains why he turned up alive after Damon tried to break his neck.

It seems that we’ve only stumbled on the tip of the iceberg since there are more secrets to uncover in Mystic Falls and hopefully, Uncle John Gilbert will unravel those hidden truths in the episodes to come. (Review courtesy of BuddyTV.com)
