The Vampire Diaries are a popular series of books first published in 1991 by L.J Smith an already established American fiction author. The story focuses on a high school student by the name of Elena Gilbert. Elena has everything going for her -  beautiful and popular within her community of Fell’s Church, Virgina, USA. Everything seems like a typical American small town, going about its everyday typical functions, that is until two vampire brothers decide to visit.

Damon and Stefan Salvatore arrive, once mortal and both fall for the young Elena. She reminds both of them of a previous lost love – Katherine who died due to their competition for her affections. Of course the two brothers are complete opposites to each other – Stefan good and Damon wild and reckless but both very beautiful. The show is proving very popular with fans all over the world and is holding it’s own, well received both by original fans of the book and also TV critics alike as the adventures unfold in the creepy town. Each episode lasting just over forty minutes in duration.

The saga is paced in three stages the first includes book one – The Awakening and book two – The Struggle.

The second installment of the series includes book one – The Fury and book two – Dark Reunion.

The final installment includes Nightfall. Now brought into the UK, there is plenty more to get your fangs into!

The UK TV series is aired every Thursday on ITV2 at 9pm so make sure if you are out, you set your box to record. Or if you are watching it from the UK there are a couple of other choices – you can view episodes that you haven’t seen by simply going to the ITV player that houses all of the episodes broadcast. Or, you can try to keep up with the American series. In order to do that, it’s possible to watch the show online from a number of different sources. Or you can always buy the series via itunes if you wish which is 100% legal and will allow you to download the episodes chosen to your hard drive to watch whenever you like.

The Vampire Diaries DVD has been given an August release date for the UK and it will include all of series one with some great extras. Have a look at the shop for more information.
